Head in my hands, I sat there in stunned silence unable to move. Emotion had overcome me, and I became a weeping mess while my eyes were transfixed to my TV as the final moments of The Walking Dead went by.

I had finally completed the game, and I found myself emotionally attached to its characters unlike in any other game I’ve played. While I grew to appreciate most characters in my group, despite many of their character flaws, there was one person who I was willing to do anything for. Clementine, an innocent 8-year-old girl I found hiding in her tree house early into the series, was the only reason for my continued existence  in this new zombie-infected world.

The game resonated so well with me because I have daughters of my own. Through each five episodes, I imagined Clementine as my own young daughter and I Lee Everett, the game’s protagonist. Each decision I made was with my own daughter’s well-being in mind. Would I entrust someone I just met to watch her as I went on a supply run, not knowing if I’d return? How truthful should I be about the dire situation we were in? After all, she’s still a very young girl, and I want to preserve her innocence as long as possible but also prepare her for the horrors that would surely come.

After the game had ended, I found myself wondering if it was all worth it. So many of my friends died along the way … each with their own family and sense of purpose before the dead began walking. Did I make the right choices? Could I have done it all differently? Should I have done it all differently? These were all questions I found myself asking as the credits rolled.

The one thought that kept coming back to me, however, was it was for her – for Clementine. In truth, I would have sacrificed the lives of every person I had met if it meant her safety, which makes the game’s emotional ending all the more heartbreaking.

Sure, the game’s visuals, sense of control and gameplay are great, but if it weren’t for the impactful story and wondrous voice acting, I don’t think The Walking Dead would have been nearly as amazing. This game truly is an emotional rollercoaster where you’ll surely feel the gamut of human emotion, from the joy of finding a new place that provides temporary sanctuary from the walkers to the stomach-turning sadness of losing a close friend.

The game is broken up into five episodes, each available for $5 on PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, iPad and PC. A disc release is also available for about $30. Do yourself a favor, and play this game. My wife is certainly no fan of video games, but this game captured her just as it did me. She regularly sat next to me while I played, fully engaged in the action and usually telling me what decision or action I should do next.

Final Thoughts

It was an incredible experience, and I can’t wait to see what next season has in store. I’ll be ready … for Clementine.
